Longing

You ask the questions to which I have no answers,
Simply intricate extensions of your own pensive queries.
I do not cower from the doubt you breathe into my mind.
I observe the smoky tendrils as they wrap themselves,
Delicately, around my beliefs.
Spidery wisps but strong nonetheless,
Searching for weaknesses to exploit.
You smirk from across the table, and I forget to breathe.
Instead, I choke on my soda,
And you laugh as I gasp from the assault of a million bubbles.
I laugh in response, if only to distract you from the longing in my eyes.
