Since the death of my older brother in 2002, I have been hesitant to alter my surname, owing to a sense of responsibility and desire to carry on my family name. However, at Mark's suggestion, we both intend to take the married name of Farrell-Churchill, following our wedding in October. The surname Farrell means "decendant of Fearghal" (Fearghal means "man of valour"), and the original O'Fearghals were Princes of Annaly, in modern day County Longford. The motto of the Farrell clan is Prodesse Non Nocere -- "To do good and not evil" -- while the Churchill family motto is Dieu Defend Le Droit -- "God defend the right" -- perfect for a pair of staunch idealists, as Mark has said. And while the traditional colours of the Churchill coat-of-arms (black, silver, and red) and the Farrell crest (gold and green) don't necessarily complement each other, we both appreciate the Lions rampant that adorn each one, and we are looking forward to legally adopting our married name.
